Sažetak
This paper describes the case of students of Tourism at the Faculty of Economics in Split doing data-driven learning (DDL) exercises. DDL refers to the use of language corpora with/by learners. Researchers keep pointing out the benefits of DDL but they also emphasise the “lack of userfriendly applications for general, everyday practice” (Tyne, 2012, p. 114). The proposed activity may also be considered a response to other requirements of modern language teaching such as demandhigh teaching (Scrivener, 2014), enhancing learner autonomy, more attention to vocabulary teaching, flipped classrooms or specific needs of teaching ESP. The paper gives a detailed account of the used corpora and of the process of data extraction. Twelve students’ vocabulary files were analysed and described in terms of the problems encountered and efficiency achieved in responding to the proposed exercises. A wide range of approaches to handling the exercises made a number of areas for analysis to surface: chunking, paraphrasing, cohesion, paragraphing, organising. Insight into students’ work also indicated a series of possible follow-up activities that may ensue from the current ones.
