Sažetak
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, 84 works of art became part of the holdings of the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters as Ante Topić Mimara’s donation. Mimara acquired the donated works of art by 1948, when he documented his collection and transferred the art from Berlin and Prague to Yugoslavia. Owing to suspicions around the circumstances of A. T. Mimara’s acquisitions and the provenance of artworks, as well as their questionable authenticity, this paper aims to offer some insight into the provenance and reception of these pieces before Mimara acquired them. Based on their identification in auction catalogues as well as on the analysis of markings on their backs, several paintings from Mimara’s donation to the Strossmayer Gallery will be positioned at German art market sales of the 1930s and 1940s. Lastly, some indications for placing Mimara’s paintings in the context of dispossessions during the Nazi-era will be considered.
