Sažetak
Legionella pneumophila can infect and multiply intracellularly in both human phagocytic cells and protozoa, but it also persist in the environment as a free-living microbe. L. pneumophila is the most common Legionella species that cause Legionnaire's disease, a serious and often fatal form of pneumonia in humans. In our experiment A/J mice which are susceptible to replicative L. pneumophila lung infection, were inoculated intratracheally with virulent strain AA100 and rib mutant (release of intracellular bacteria) of L. pneumophila. We have showed that, similar to the protozoan host, the induction of necrosis of alveolar epithelium and lysis of inflammatory cells is mediated by pore-forming toxin. However, we aslo conclude that pore forming activity of L. pneumohila is not required for intracellular replication.
