Sažetak
The general impact of humanity on the environment, coupled with the rapid utilization of resources, is causing serious issues to the population and is unfortunately sometimes leading to physical phenomena, not entirely unpredictable, and to respective devastations. Energy remains, by any sense of definition, in the focus of the 21st century, with direct impact to the global economic growth and hence one of the main causes of climate change. It is more than clear, that global population seeks the gradual energy transition from conventional energy resources towards a more sustainable future, in order to ensure the prosperity and even the survival of population. Renewable energy sources are foundations of the present and the future of tomorrow's energy systems. Hydrogen has got a potential to support existing renewable based systems in temporally and spatially critical conditions, related to the demand in specific cases. Therefore, there is no doubt that hydrogen will have its role in this transition, as it can be produced from the utilization of renewable energy sources and it can be efficiently integrated into the existing electrical systems. The main task of researchers, engineers and professionals is to enable a sustainable energy future for humanity, which in any case is a complex task with different and intertwined influences. Thus, different engineering disciplines are called in, mechanical, electrical, environmental, chemical engineering to name some, and a close cooperation is needed to ensure the development of novel, efficient and effective energy technologies.
