Sažetak
Software-Defined Networking is a new network solution developed as an answer to increasing demand in network performance. SDN architecture provides meaningful performance improvements in shape of network architecture simplification, increased network capacity and speed. Main idea of SDN is decoupling control and data plane which unloads network devices, offers centralized network control and improves performance. Another great advantage of SDN is that it uses software devices which are cheaper to deploy and easier to upgrade or replace. SDN switches are software switches working only on data plane. Their sole purpose is forwarding packets for which they use their flow entries inside flow tables. SDN controller takes care of control plane in SDN networks and implements network optimization algorithms, forms flow entries to write to SDN switches, manages SDN switches and is in charge of the whole network. To unload SDN controllers, even software applications may be used that implement almost all controller functions which further increase performance. These application communicate with controllers via REST or Java API and controllers communicate with switches via OpenFlow protocol. Network Packet Broker is a software application that enables user to add flows and manage Open vSwitches in SDN networks. It uses OpenDaylight Lithium controller and OVS 2.4 in order to implement its functionalities. NPB offers a great overview of SDN and shows every advantage it has over conventional networks. Using Mininet for network simulation, OVS performance tests were conducted. These tests gave insight in how well OVS performes in different scenarios including multiple flow entries, flow tables and network hosts. Also, NPB was deployed in a real SDN network where it worked properly with its full functionality.
