Sažetak
The generally higher standard of living has significant consequences on the aesthetic demands of patients concerning restorative tooth reconstructions. Special attention has been given to endodontically treated teeth with severely damaged coronal parts. Most frequently, such teeth are treated with crowns and onlays, which necessitate intracanal post and core treatment before they can be placed. The main role of root canal post and core is to replace destroyed tooth tissue. Root canal posts and core build-ups ensure a hihg rate of retention and strength in the root canal and provide the basis for the new crown or onlay. Thus, this type of reconstruction helps to reinforce the weakened root canal and enables appropriate stress distribution along the post and root. The main role of the metal-free root canal post and core is to integrate the root dentine with the restoration in homogenous fashion to ensure the true-to-nature aesthetic appearance of the restored tooth. The glass-fibre reinforced composite root canal posts, core and adhesive resin cement behave as a stress absorber in the root canal. They demonstrate a similar modulus of elasticity as the dentin as well as favourable transversal resistance to lateral forces, which sometimes may lead to crown fracture in the radicular area. The composite core is built up directly onto the remaining tooth structure around the adhesively cemented post. Adequate adhesive treatment enables good bonding with the tooth structure and metal-free crown. The supragingival reconstruction (core) which serves as a basis for the crown, can be succesfuly fabricated using composite resins.
