Sažetak
A scientist is not only a carrier of one`s work but contributes enormously to the promotion of his homeland. Faust Vrančić surely is one. It is often claimed that Šibenik gave Croatian humanism a figure that left a permanent mark with his rich and versatile creative opus and huge influence in public life of Europe. The authors have analyzed life and work of Faust Vrančić, the Memorial centre of Faust Vrančić on the island of Prvić and in Prvić Luka and its display which are all dedicated to the life and work of the Croatian philosopher, lexicographer, bishop and inventor. Furthermore, the authors have analyzed the manner in which famous personalities like Faust Vrančić could be used in tourist promotion of his homeland. His most significant work in physics is „Machinae novae“ which contains around fifty large pictures engraved on copper plates depicting 56 different machines, devices, and technical concepts that were visionary for that time and included ideas of bridges, water ways, energy usage, air and wind, „homo volans“ – the flying man. His five- language dictionary has only 5000 words but is extremely important due to the period when it was written and the fact that it contains Croatian language (not English, Spanish or Russian) which represents a huge contribution to Croatian lexicology. These two pieces of his extraordinary work have had European dimension and resonance and a great number of visitors from Croatia and foreign countries visit daily the island of Prvić and the Memorial centre especially in summer season. This paper will try to point out potential elements of this great man and his work in the development and enrichment of our region that relies heavily on tourism.
