Sažetak
With regard to a high dropout rate of children from sport and prevention of consecutive decrement of motivation, it is important to understand their perception of sport situation and their motivational concepts (Roberts, 1993). Competitive sport is an achievement-oriente context appropriate for examining achievemnet behaviour which is determinable by to predominant goals (task and ego), that influence athlete's achievemnet beliefs and behaviour. These goal perspectives relate differentially to the level of satisfaction and intrinsic enjoyment experiences in the sport situations. Presumably, the task involment (focusing on activity, not on an outcome) is positively associated with the intrinsic motivation (IM) factors, such as interest/enjoymnent (I/E), effort/importance (E/I), and perceived competence (PC) (Duda et al., 1995). The ego involvement reflects externally regulated behaviour with constraints toward outcome and results that reduce IM athletes feel pressure as a consequence of externally regulation of their sport behaviour. The aim of the paper is to determinate the relationship of goal orientations and a muktidimensional measure of IM in young track-and-field athletes. It is also focused on gender differences in the task and ego orientations and indicators of IM. The results of ANOVA showed that girls perceived the sport activity as more enjoyable and interesting than boys. Boys found active sport involvement in track-and-field to be a greater source of stress. Boys more often felt nervousness and pressure than girls during sports activity, whereas sex did not discriminate participants in their perceptions of competence in sport, or exerted effort. These results provided moderate support to the predicted relationships between goal orientations and iM indices, based on the majority of mainstream studies. The finding that the ego orientation was not independent from IM factors might suggest that children do not necessarily use a single criterion to evaluate their success in sports. The improvements of the adapted, Croatian version of the IMI are necessary prior to further implementations. Additionally these results should be investigated in relation to other motivational concepts.
