Sažetak
The paper aims to contribute to the development of geospatial industry sectoral analysis and to the better understanding of its operation in a complex global environment which is characterized by a high level of interdependence and vunerability among the regions. The paper consists of two parts. The first part describes both a geopolitical and an economic contexts of doing business in the Croatian geodetic companies. The second part of the paper which aims to present preliminary results of professor Mraović's author scientific and teaching project titled „Stakeholders' Profile in Geodesy“, analyses the data collected in a social survey on a sample of 43 geodetic companies on the territory of 12 counties of Croatia during the year 2013 and 2014. A subject of analysis is an impact of company size on its capacity of coping with the 2008/2010 global financial crisis. Relying on the current research literature about the Western Balkans region the paper emphasizes several trends: 1. These economies have gradually become dependent on the EU economy, as their development largely depends on foreign savings, i.e. on the inflows of foreign direct investments (FDI), foreign loans and remittances ; 2. As some analysts emphasize, the Balkan region is economically more integrated with the EU than within itself ; 3. Unfavourable trend sin the global financial environment were transferred to the Western Balkans region through contraction of the global economy and international trade, as well as a significant growth in the cost of foreign debts ; 4. The crisis has led to a sharp halt in the economic growth of the region, while a continuous current account deficit presents a constant source of macro-economic vunerability and contributes to the growing level of poverty in this part of the world. In distinction from the rest of the Croatian economy which was hit by the crisis in 2009, the crisis in the Croatian geodetic sector became apparent in 2010. For the geospatial industry is highly dependent on investment spending. The survey has revealed the medium sized companies as the ones that were the most successful in coping with the crisis. A lesson learned from the global financial crisis is that huge risks for both the advanced and the developing countries arise from the exaggerated credit expansions which rely upon the temporarily cheap money without taking into considerations a debtor's real capacity to repay a debt.
