Sažetak
Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić (1874 – 1938), a Croatian children and youth authoress, has been entered into the Croatian literary canon quite a long time ago. However, one may generally talk about the reception of authoress’ works on the level of The Marvelous Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice novel and the Croatian Tales of Long Ago fairy tale collection. When it comes to the Jaša Dalmatin, the Viceroy of Gujarati, a literary and critical reception have been almost completely absent. The authoress’ published novel is comprised of two completed and incomplete part (“Conclusion”), encompassing the 1478 – 1509 period, being more similar to a sketch and a future novel completion guideline. Fir the understanding of the novel, also important is the authoress’ addendum “A Short Glossary of Certain Jaša Dalmatin’s Terms, ” which may be perused as a sort of a subtext. The Croat Jaša Dalmatin, an Ottoman slave, is a character of a constructor and visionary who erects an unconquerable fortification on the shores of the Indian Ocean, based upon Dubrovnik, an image of a town from the childhood of his own. The dramatis persona of Jaša Dalmatin, as well as the novel as a whole, become a desirable identification model and an educational orientation. The paper analyzes, typologizes, and hierarchizes the fundamental human and educational values pursuant to the divergence levels between modernity and a moral in children’s literature.
