Sažetak
Among immigrant literature writers we frequently find authors born out of mixed couples. What often characterizes their literary work is repeatedly explored issue of mixed ethnicity, which usually creates an inner conflict in characters. An example of conflict mixed-race heritage we find in the work of Gabriella Kuruvilla, half Italian and half Indian contemporary authoress. Her short stories reveal a perennial identity conflict present in her characters, as well as recurring autobiographical motifs which exteriorize this incessant dissension through the physical and emotional suffering, manifested in frequent representations of body that becomes, at the same time, subject and object of this precarious balance. This dual- identity crisis represents a fundamental element of her literary work, through which the authoress connects the personal identity with the ethnic identity. In this paper the aim is to analyze some Kuruvilla’s short stories focusing in them, in the first place, the issues of identity, of inability to achieve balanced relations as well as of presence of severe emotional dislocation in characters. The analysis should point out the presence of imbalance in characters due to their intrapersonal and intrapsychic conflict which results in the loss of identity. In the paper, the aim is also to show that it is not easy to classify Gabriella Kuruvilla as "second generation immigrant authors" in Italy.
