Sažetak
Firstly, in this work, a preview of morphology changes in the rivers and history about river management in Europe is presented. Materials that are used in river regulations, types and principles for selecting a certain material are also described in detail. In this paper, all the conventional methods that are used in the regulation of watercourses, their positive and negative characteristics are depicted and then, an overview of their properties and implementation was given. After conventional methods, all the new, non-conventional methods are described and the reasons why new methods are implemented. Their positive and negative characteristics and comparison to characteristics of conventional methods are elaborated in the discussion of the paper. Special accent is placed on a river revitalization and their benefits, especially in urban areas. At the end of this paper, a discussion about implementation of new methods in river regulation, reasons why they should be more applied and reasons why sometimes conventional methods are unavoidable and rational is written.

Napomena
This work was partly the result of the work in the framework of the support for material-challenging research under the University of Rijeka "Hydrology of water resources and identification of flood risks and mud flows in the karst area" (leader: prof. Nevenka Ožanić, PhD) and with the participation on Erasmus exchange program on University of Brno (Czech Republic).
