Sažetak
One of the greatest achievements of mankind, if not a greatest, is the enormous extension of human life. Prehistoric people rarely lived more than 35 years, and midlevel people live about 60 years on average. In last 50 years, we are witnessing that vast majority of people are living up to 80 years, and this prolongation of human life is still present, so every year our World is becoming older, e. g. more elderly people are in society. Almost every person in Western world today know other person who is over 90 years old. In near future, all of us will be aware of some centenarian who has celebrated his, or more probable her, birthday. People are living longer today than ever, but everybody agree that the longevity per se is not enough, even more important is the quality of person's life. So, in future people would continue to live longer than today, but they would like to be still involved in society, healthy enough to participate in various activities, and capable to maintain active and recognised role as a member of their community, till the end of their life. Today, we know that the major risk for developing dementia is an age, namely as older the person is, there is more chance to develop dementia. Among oldest old people, about half of them have some stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). That's the reason why more than 100 substances are tested in various clinical trials for the potential inovative treatment, and hopefully cure will be found. In meantime, high quality care and combination of non-pharmacological approach together with standard treatment is highly recommended. It is now up to everyone to solve the problem, how to live long and without AD, how to reduce the growing risk of getting sick of AD and how to live better with AD. This is certainly possible, through certain preventive measures and scientific translational research, but it will take time and a lot of investment. There is no doubt that this dream is achievable. We believing that in the future everybody will be able to live much longer than today, but we also believe that the longevity for everybody without Alzheimer's is also possible. To assure this we know that whole society must fight dementia, so the national strategy against Alzheimers disease and other dementia should be priority part of every national public health policy.
