Sažetak
Negative concord is a language phenomenon in which a single instance of semantic negation is expressed by two or more negative elements. The most common negative concord variety is negative concord proper (NCP). It is co-occurence of negative indefinites with predicate negation. Non-strict NCP refers to the word order ruled NCP. If a predicate is initial, NCP is required. On the other hand, if a negative indefinite is initial, NCP is optional or not allowed at all. Unlike contemporary Slavic languages, Croatian Church Slavonic (CCS) is a non-strict NCP language. The same goes for Old Greek. But Latin, as the source language of many CCS texts, doesn't exhibit negative concord at all. Old Church Slavonic is a non-strict NCP language, too. In the history of Croatian non-strict NCP was exhibited until the 19th century. Some scholars, unaware of the word order rule, attributed that to the influence of Latin or Italian. However, thorough consideration of the negative concord in CCS (Kovačević 2016: 225-262) revealed that it is more appropriate to claim that Latin encouraged some choices where choice was possible, i. e. when negative indefinite is initial. This is confirmed by the notion regarding CCS fragments (12.–13.c.) that NCP is exhibited more often when CCS is translated from Old Greek (Mihaljević 2006: 234). The aim of this paper is to further the analysis of the relation between Latin and CCS with respect to the non-strict NCP. The analysis will be conducted on the Second Beram Breviary, Croatian glagolitic manuscript from the 15th century. The special emphasis will be put on the translation patterns regarding word order and CCS sentences with initial negative indefinite.
