spatial prepositions, framework of Prototype Semantics, preposition na 'on', 'onto', 'at' in Croatian, Slovenian, Russsian, and Polish
Sažetak
The authors analyze the preposition na, 'on', 'onto', 'at', mainly in its spatial meanings in Croatian, with a comparison of equivalent lexical items in other Slavic languages (exemplified by Slovenian, Russian, and Polish) in the framework of Prototype semantics. The analysis shows that the main spatial concepts expressed by the preposition 'na' coincide in all the language considered. They also form the basis for the metaphorical extensions shared by these languages. More differences occur in other domains. This reflects a systematic difference in the structuring of the prepositional category. The analysis has shown that the main prototypes exhibited by the prepositional category are shared in the Slavic languages, with the differences within one group of Slavic being smaller than the differences between two different groups.
