Sažetak
During the seven year period from the beginning of 1989 till the end of 1995 the epidemiological characteristics of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDS in the Zadar area, south Croatia, were observed, because of the importance and impact of these diseases for the public health. The war happened in this area during this period, too. The diagnoses were confirmed by clinical and laboratory findings. Among 617 patients who were registered, 634 cases of STDs and AIDS were recorded. 17 patients had a double-mixed infection. Nongonococcal urethritis was the most frequent, 287 (45.3%) cases, then genital warts 175 (27.6%), gonorrhoea 103 (16.2%), pubic lice 27 (4.3%), syphilis 15 (2.4%), genital herpes simplex 15 (2.4%), AIDS 11 (1.7%) and mollusca contagiosa 1 (0.2%). The occurrence of STDs is constantly decreasing in this observed period, especially during the war. The incidence of all diseases in 1995 was 24.4/100 000 inhabitants. Gonorrhoea and syphilis occurred very rarely, but AIDS could be become a big problem, though the number of AIDS patients is low at present. The average age of all patients was 29.7 years. Among the total number of patients were 17.7% sailors. Approximately one half (47.7%) of the patients with syphilis and 36.4% patients with AIDS belonged to the sailors. During this period, especially in time of the war, we have recorded a low incidence and occurrence of STDs and AIDS in the Zadar area.
