Sažetak
Bartonellosis includes infections caused by newly emerging pathogens of genus Bartonella. Bartonellae are arthropod-borne, gram-negative rods capable of causing long lasting intraerythrocytic infections in their specific mammalian species as a host. They belong to the alfa-2 subclass of Proteobacteria. On the basis of genetic similarity, the species formerly within genus Rochalimaea and Grahamella are now included in the genus Bartonella. In recent years several new Bartonella species are described. The genus Bartonella currently comprises 20 species, eight of which have been associated with human diseases. The most human infections are caused by human-specific species Bartonella bacilliformis and B. quintana and the zoonotic species B.henselae. B.bacilliformis is agent of Carrion's disease: Oroya fever and verruga peruana ; B.quintana may cause trench fever, bacillary angiomatosis and endocarditis ; and B.henselae is distributed worldwide and can cause variety of clinical manifestations like cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis and peliosis, endocarditis, bacteraemia with fever and neuroretinitis. Other Bartonella species have recently been implicated as human pathogens. B.claridgeiae is possibly another agent of CSD ; B.elizabethae and B.vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii may cause endocarditis ; B. vinsonii subsp. arupensis has been found in patient with fever and bacteraemia ; B.grahamii may cause neuroretinitis ; and B.washoensis was isolated from a patient with myocarditis. The Bartonella species are unique because they cause chronic bacteraemia with no or few symptoms in their specific reservoir hosts.
