Sažetak
The aim of the paper is to compare socio-demographic data in the group of addicts to games of chance and alcohol addicts to try to answer whether sociodemographic factors affect the occurrence of both types of addiction and whether both addictions cause similar family and social consequences. The research was carried out during 2007 and 2008. Two groups were examined, the first with 30 drug addicts, and the other with 30 alcohol addicts, both at the stage of treatment initiated. It is apparent from the results of the study that compulsive gamblers are generally significantly younger compared to alcohol addicts, with lower education, mostly unmarried, without children or with one child, as a reason for gambling, subjectively seeing the need to feel better and habit. They show significantly less aggressiveness than alcohol addicts. Alcohol addicts, compared to gambling, older, with higher education, are significantly more often married than divorced, and the proportion of retirees and the unemployed is significantly higher. As a drinking reason, subjective means are seen to improve the present dissatisfaction. Aggressive gambling addicts show much more often than compulsive gamblers.
