Sažetak
The results of an interaction analysis of the E.F.L. classroom discourse show that learners perform several verbal functions which differ in frequency. Replying is the most frequent function, i.e. more than 2/3 of learner utterances can be classified as responses to elicitations. This fact leads us to further analysis of learners' replies. The first aim of the analysis is to discover the basic features of learners' replies with reference to their form and structure. The second aim is to describe learners' replies with reference to the kind of information they contain and the type of elicitation that initiated learner verbal output. The obtained data enable us to discover communication strategies that learners use in this speech situation. The results lead us to the conclusion that the type of communication activity in general and the type of question in particular highly determine the nature of learner replies. The implications of this research for teaching practice are pointed out in the conclusive part of this paper.
