Sažetak
In everyday life we are exposed to various types of texts, from simple ones to very specialized ones. Text can be described as a unit organized on different levels - thematical, grammatical, linguistic, etc. the aim of which is to communicate certain information. Due to the availability of different texts on a daily basis, being able to work with the text and to comprehend it, is an important linguistic skill. The use of texts, particularly authentic ones in ESP (English for Specific Purposes), is very important since it prepares the students for independent use of a language in the real world within their professional field, for pursuing their personal interests but also for performing different tasks in their profession. While skills needed for text comprehension have to be developed through tasks accompanying texts, the exposure to text itself in an ESP classroom does not necessarily mean that students will acquire these skills. The aim of this paper is to present the importance of using authentic texts in the classroom and the role of specific tasks accompanying the text in developing reading skill. A small-scale research done with a group of university students provides an insight on whether different tasks can influence better text comprehension, better obtaining and transfer of information, and how all of this encourages the development of communicative competence
