Sažetak
Reading in a foreign language can be a source of anxiety which is connected to foreign language learning. Given that the reading skills are very often the main way of obtaining information, and since reading is a complex cognitive process, it is very important in foreign language learning. As Sellers (2000) states reading in a foreign language can be problem because we need to take into account the unknown vocabulary, phrases, differences in culture, and it is sometimes complicated due to the different rules of writing, while at the same time we must coordinate our attention, perception, memory and comprehension. When readers read texts in foreign language, they are trying to decode unknown script, writing system, and cultural materials. In LSP it is even more difficult because of the professional terms that can make comprehension more complicated, and therefore it can cause higher reading anxiety. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is foreign language reading anxiety for undergraduate students of Hospitality at Karlovac University of Applied Sciences. A comparative study for English and German was conducted by using Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS) (Saito, Horwitz and Garza, 1999). The aim of the survey was to see how foreign language anxiety correlates with years of foreign language learning, the self-assessment of foreign language knowledge, and reading outside the classroom. The results show that anxiety exists. It is important that both teachers and students are aware of it and that together we can create the conditions for the reduction of anxiety, such as good preparation before reading and using strategies that would make reading and understanding the texts easier.
