Sažetak
Strategically positioned along the road connecting the Dalmatian coast to its hinterland, fortress of Sinj persisted as an inhabited stronghold since ancient times until the end of the 18th century. The fortress developed during the Middle Ages into an urban center and during the Ottoman rule was administrative center of the surrounding area. Fortress of Sinj fell in the Venetian hands in 1686 and then began its intensive renovation. Because of its location along the border line towards the Ottoman Empire, like almost simultaneously won fortress of Knin, it had outstanding military-strategic importance for the Venetian Republic. After the fall of the Venetian Republic, already dilapidated fortress was demolished, and during the 19th century it was abandoned by its last resident. Her remains were the subject of rescue excavations from 2004 to 2015. The identification of the strategic role attributed to Sinj fortress by contemporary military experts and government officials during the process of the establishment of Dalmatian defense system at the end of 17th and at the beginning of 18th century will be the starting point of the presentation. This will be achieved through the analysis and comparison of the primary sources, mostly documents from the State Archive in Zadar and contemporary drawings. It will also allow the reconstruction of the dynamic of military and political dialogue in Dalmatia at that period and the role of its contributors. The ultimate goal of the presentation is to improve our knowledge of Venetian defense strategy in Dalmatia and its impact on modernization of fortresses along the Venetian-Ottoman border line.
