Sažetak
Women represented in the media are highly stereotyped, underrepresented and unequally shown in comparison to men. The aim of this study was to examine high school graduate’s perception of women represented in the media and investigate determinants of their attitude. 280 Zagreb high school graduates were asked about their socio-demographic data, perception of biased portrayals of women in the media, agreement with such representation, attitudes towards gender roles for adolescents and their own gender roles. Results show that boys and girls moderately agree with the representation of women in the media, with girls scoring signifi cantly lower than boys. Agreement with representation of women in the media was predicted by perception of unequal and under representation of women in media in subsample of girls, and among boys by their perception of stereotyped looks, features and roles of women and masculine gender roles. Results indicate the importance of knowledge about gender issues for developing critical awareness towards the media.
