Sažetak
The paper focuses on an analysis of Croatian translations of the Lewis Carroll’s children’s novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) with respect to the way of translating or transferring original names of the protagonist and other characters in translations. There are nine Croatian translations of Alice in Wonderland, and some of them have been re-published several times. The first Croatian translation by Mira Šunjić (later Jurkić Šunjić) was published in 1944, and the most recent translation by Borivoj Radaković appeared in 2016. The names in individual translations are compared with the original and interpreted in terms of domestication or foreignization. Special attention is given to personal names which are descriptive or semantically loaded. Translation strategies are detected and described in terms of previous research (Franco Aixelá 1996, Nord 2003 and Van Coillie 2006) and their effects on the meanings in the target texts are interpreted. Finally, the implications of domestication and foreignization of personal names in analysed translations of Alice are considered regarding the modified meanings of the original storyworld offered to the potential child reader of individual translated texts.
