Sažetak
Cultural participation as a strategy for revitalizing a vacation town Urban landscape is a complex phenomenon that is perpetually transforming and reshaping in accordance with changes in lifestyle. One of the results of this transformational process is the vast amount of neglected and abandoned spaces, as well as deserted settlements, inside or on the edges of the urban core that are remnants of the past. Bearing in mind the complexity of the revitalization process, our focus is on cultural strategies and culturally led revitalization plans that are currently considered the ‘go to’ recipe for rebuilding communities. In this paper, we investigate the levels of participation and increases in social and cultural capital in a developing settlement. In this work, the authors research the revitalization process of a coastal settlement in Croatia that abounds with the following specifics: First, the location is a planned vacation town in Croatia, an elite seasonal settlement with distinct micro urban space developed from complex modernist urban planning. Second, the home settlement of Červar Porat was reputed as being a very successful project of the development from the late sixties until the beginning of the nineties. Next two decades were shaped by rapid deterioration of physical as well as social aspects of settlement. Concurrently, housing shifts emerged in the marketplace and the second home settlement transformed into a permanent home settlement. That transformation brought new demands to everyday life in the settlement that ultimately increased of the quality of life for permanent residents. This article presents the results of a bottom up research project conducted on the cultural dynamic and the aspirations of the permanent and temporary residents of Červar Porat. The goal was to evaluate its successful transformation from a temporary to a permanent settlement and explore whether it is likely that culture became one of the key tools for achieving a vibrant micro urban space in Červar Porat.
