Sažetak
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection has become an emerging infection in many European countries. We analyzed the prevalence in profesionally exposed and non-exposed population groups in continental Croatia. From June 2014 to May 2017, a total of 322 serum samples collected from Croatian residents were tested for IgM and IgG anti-HEV antibodies using a commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. IgM positive samples were furthermore tested for HEV RNA by RT-PCR method. Overall IgG seroprevalence was 4.6%, whereas IgM prevalence was 1.2%. No IgM sample was positive for HEV RNA. IgG positive samples were most prevalent in alcohol abusers, forest workers and injecting drug users compared to hunters, healthcare workers, general population and pregnant women. Our results indicate that HEV IgG prevalence rates differ among different population groups.
