Sažetak
Although the concept of honor is now considered obsolete in the Western society, more appropriate for bygone times or different cultures, we still cannot dismiss it completely. Regarded as our social standing in the eyes of other people, it is still considered as something positive, something every individual should aspire to, but probably not at every cost. Therefore, honor did not vanish from our society, but its meaning and its content gradually changed. Nevertheless, with regards to contemporary politics, it seems that concept of honor is missing completely. As representative democracy in our times gets increasingly scrutinized, among other limitations because of its perceived “gap” between the public and their representatives, is it possible to reintroduce the idea of honor into contemporary politics or is that chance irretrievably lost? This paper will examine the role of honor in politics from ancient times to the modern era, and will try to give some suggestions how this idea (or at least parts of it) could be used to save democracy in our trying globalized times.
