Sažetak
The essay is based on systematic research of the stereotyped image of Jews based on cartoons and jokes which appeared in the satyrical paper "Zvekan" (The Simpelton) in the period from 1890 to 1903. These jokes and cartoons foolow the development of the image of Jews, from a despised low class character to the Jewish citizen, well-established in society. The research tries to demonstrate that during this period (1890-1903) there were no antisemitic papers, and that jokes and cartoons involving Jews were insignificant, compared to other subjects. These jokes and cartoons derived mostly from the Berlin "Fligende Blatter" and were adapted to Croatian circumstances, this conclusion can be on the basis of signatures or the initials of the cartoonists. The author concludes that ridiculing Jews was a general phenomenon and a result of predjudice.
