Sažetak
Herbal based anticancer drugs are known for their relative low toxicity compared to standard chemoterapeutics. Besides, the developing of cancer resistance to herbal based drug is less frequent, due to the complex drug structure. However, as each drug, these drugs can also express the considerable and in some cases even fatal dose dependent level of toxicity, when applied in to high doses. Another cause of toxicity can be a too long period of therapy, due to the successive cumulation of a drug in the tissues. Besides, the toxicity can be expressed as genotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, dermal toxicity, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and receptor- mediated toxicity, or any combination of them. Therefore, and especially in cases when standard chemoterapeutics are no choice, the application of herbal based anticancer drugs is the only choice. As clinical trials for these class of drugs are relative rare, their toxicity is mostly unknown. For this, we performed in silico testing for several herbal anticancer compounds, and where available, compared the results with toxicity data gathered from in vivo experiments. Our results show in silico testing of toxicity of anticancer herbal compounds is of the outmost importance in cased when the standard therapy fails, in vivo experimental data are missing or incomplete, and the quick alternative therapy is the only way to aleviate cancer related clinical simptoms.
