Sažetak
The presentation deals with the relation between nationalist discourses and memory of war in contemporary Croatian society, through analysis of three national hero figures (a political leader, a glorified warrior, and a musical celebrity). Focusing on the recent rise of nationalism in Croatia and social contestations of memory of its recent past – war of independence and formation of the state – it explores different uses of hero figures within political discourse, popular culture and specific cultural practices. It analyzes the ways in which contemporary evocations and uses of hero figures reveal broader social, cultural and political processes.
