Sažetak
The presentation deals with memory of Franjo Tuđman, the first president of Croatia after its independence, as an integral part of the contemporary making of national heroes in Croatian society, following the notion of hero- making as a process of social construction in which different actors partake, and in which meanings and understandings of heroism are continuosly negotiated and reinterpreted (Scheipers 2014). The presentation focuses on one aspect of hero-making, the materialization of memory, by comparing practices of memory around two different memory materializations – Tuđman’s grave at the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb and Tuđman’s monument in the city of Knin. It aims to show how different materializations of memory of the same hero figure provoke different responses, that is, how the ways people enact/perform memory differ depending on the materialization they are responding to.
