Sažetak
The paper presents the analysis of local self-administration capacities to adjust to the European Union’s environmental standards in two countries - Serbia (research conducted in 2013/2014) and Croatia (research conducted in 2007/2008) during their accession to the European Union. Conclusions point to similar challenges in different periods regarding environmental legislation in these two countries and point out the key areas that were needed to strengthen their capacities at local level - in cities and municipalities. Recommendations for the future are aimed at further strengthening of cooperation and exchange of experiences and knowledge of the two neighbouring countries in the implementation of EU environmental legislation at the level of local self-administration as a way to successfully address environmental challenges.
