Sažetak
Youth reveal personal information via different types of posts on Facebook which makes them exposed and vulnerable. Parental mediation, or, traditionally, control (parental strictness- permissiveness), as one of two major dimensions of parental behaviour, aims to direct child's behaviour toward positive outcomes via supervision and setting rules. Aim of this research was to examine possible differences in Facebook self-disclosure and associated behavioural consequences (e.g. social media and internet usage) among youth who perceive their parents as high/low on parental control of youth cyber-behaviour. Croatian adolescents (N=1138, quota sample, age 12 - 18) were surveyed about Facebook self-disclosure, perception of parental mediation, and some other aspects of youth behaviour in cyber – space. Youth with parents who are perceived low in parental mediation disclose more about themselves on Facebook than youth with less permissive parents. Youth who perceive their parents as more permissive have lower grades. Although they report that internet is less available to them, they also report that they spent more hours using internet both on work and on weekdays, have more friends on Facebook, posts more photos showing themselves or their friends, post more quotes and reveal their current location and links with questions on Ask.fm more frequently than youth who perceive their parents as stricter. Less controlling parents have children whose personal information (gender, date of birth, address, school, relationship status – both romantic and allied, phone number, e-mail and religion) are displayed under less strict privacy settings. Results of this research suggest that adolescents, who perceive their parents as less controlling, show different cyber-behaviours which are considered as less safe.
