Sažetak
The paper will reflect on possiblities of development of new cross-border cultural routes in Croatia in the framework of the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes programme. Croatia's accession to the EU presented an unique opportunity to focus on the elements of its European identity and the cosmopolitan richness of a shared, multinational and transnational, cultural heritage, as well as to explore multiple benefits of its proper valorization through cross-border cultural cooperation by promoting sustainable cultural tourism. It will present research conducted in the framwork of the course „Cultural routes“ which makes part of the Interdisciplinary Study Programme of Culture and Tourism at the University of Pula, Croatia, and propose innovative practices and methods in education and training of students as well as local communities. As part of the curriculum requirements, students organized in the 'project teams' were given the task to design the Croatian section of the existing or future European cultural routes. After studying the concept of the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes, the history of the programme, certification and evaluation criteria, students analyzed the existing cultural routes and proposed new Croatian sections of the existing European Cultural Routes, such as: the Roman Emperors Route, the Route of the Olive Tree, Transromanica, ATRIUM, The Route of Industrial Heritage, Pilgrim Routes, etc. They also proposed some new routes which should promote a common European identity and multicultural heritage of Croatia and its neighbours, such as Literary Routes, Tracing the Argonauts, Routes of Fortified Heritage and the Route of the Lloyd's Steamers. Since the results of the student projects were presented during the workshops organized for the local stakeholders, the author concludes that this kind of project-based research and training and inclusive workshops could enhance awareness raising and capacity building efforts in the field of sustainable heritage management of the most valuable local cultural resources which present also the common European identity and multicultural history of Croatia.
