Sažetak
Burnout is a psychological syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and impaired personal accomplishment. It has primarily been studied in employees, especially within occupations that involve contact with people. Lately burnout among full – time students has become an area of research, since they experience multiple socio - economic, relational and socio-professional outcome concerns during their studies. They are not formally employed but their involvement in taking classes, sitting for exams and performing various specific tasks may be interpreted as a form of work. Health care workers are among professions in which burnout has been identified as a serious problem but there is little understanding of susceptibility to burnout in students of health studies. This study examines prevalence and level of burnout among students of health studies and relationships among burnout and some personal variables (self-esteem, self-compassion, optimism - pessimism) and perceived stress. Subjects were 236 undergraduate students from the University of Applied Health Sciences. Maslach Burnout Inventory – Student Survey (MBI-SS), Rosenberg Self – Esteem Scale, Self - Compassion Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Optimism – Pessimism Scale were used. The mean scores of students results fell within moderate burnout range in all three subscales of the MBI-SS (exhaustion, cynicism and academic efficacy). 17, 4% of the students are at high risk of burnout. Significant predictors were perceived stress and type of study for exhaustion, perceived stress and self-esteem for cynicism and self - esteem and type of study for academic efficacy. Female students had higher score on exhaustion subscale. Further investigation is needed in gaining a greater understanding of predictors of burnout in students so that strategies for reducing burnout and promoting greater academic and personal fulfilment for students could be accomplished.
