Sažetak
Decision support problem is analysed as the base for any rational decision making. It is formed by combination of the insight into basic features of the design problem by experienced designer and the mathematical formulation, solvable with available techniques and hardware, by operations research (OR) specialist. A very competitive ship market as well as a number of novel concepts, including advanced marine vehicles, has created a need for improvement in design methods both in applicable analysis tools and in synthesis (decision making) techniques to form a balanced design procedure. The methods capable of validating new concepts as well as generating competitive designs are considered. Design process (including design problem identification, design model formulation, problem solution and sensitivity assessment) is analysed and applicable formulations and software are referenced together with examples of non-academic structural design problems. Chapter starts with design problem requirements, continues with some useful problem manipulations and strategies of solutions that can accommodate those requirements and finishes with practical application possibilities in structural design process from concept to detail design.
