Sažetak
The fundamental issue addressed is the tension, or overlap, or integration of 'science' and 'culture' - especially culture embedded in the Humanities and Social Sciences. At the present time, an overview of university studies indicates a strong inclination to monodisciplinarity. On the other hand, inter/multi/transdisciplinary research has become the European and global reality. Concrete examples are provided on, e.g., 'swine flu', collaborative project on water research in Australia, the use of robots in diagnosing and (possibly treating) autistic children. The interrelationship between knowledge/tradition and ethical/bioethical issues is discussed. Examples of these interrelationships are provided for King's College in London, Edinburgh Medical Sciences etc. What is especially stressed is that the Humanities in general terms serve the important role in development of critical and independent thought. The Humanities also identify important cultural and social values as well as challenging widely held assumptions and beliefs. The distinction between empirical and orientational knowledge is introduced (Jurgen Mittelstrass) and the fact that the Humanities can help bridge and combine different 'cultures of knowledge' is elaborated with special stress on different ethical/bioethical traditions.
