Sažetak
The islands are exposed to ever increasing pressures of development, particularly of tourist settlements and the accompanying services infrastructure which impose the demand on sufficient quantities of drinking water and high-standard and sustainable wastewater and stormwater as well as solid waste management systems. The problem of water supply is currently resolved by water displacement, particularly by constructing water supply lines fed by the water from more bountiful coastal aquifers, that obviously not stimulating the conservation of water and its reuse. Analysis is made of the difference between supply and demand side water management, decentralized technologies and water reuse are reviewed, mentioning insular experiences worldwide and optimum approach to water and waste management for Croatian islands is proposed, placing a particular emphasis on education. The Republic of Croatia has enviable potential of qualified professionals, the skills and collective industrial memory. Based on the need of sustainable tourist development of the islands and preservation of their precious resources, it is proposed to apply the model of circular utility services economy on the islands.
