CFD Simulation of liquid-liquid systems
Sažetak
The present thesis addresses the numerical representation of liquid/liquid flows with a well defi ned interface and without surfactants. A numerical procedure with differentiated treatment for phase coupling is presented. It allows accurate predictions of the interfacial behaviour in two- phase systems consisting of fluids with similar physical properties. In this approach, governing equations are applied to each phase individually while the interface is represented by a zero thickness surface in which interfacial jumps are contemplated. Governing equations are described by the ALE approach and discretized by the nite volume method. The pressure/velocity fields are calculated according to the PISO procedure. The novel treatment for inter-phase coupling incorporates interfacial jump updates into the pressure/velocity calculations. The methodology's predictive capability is evaluated under different dominant effects governing interface motion. Validation test cases include capillary and gravitational waves, as well as the dynamics of droplets facing initial deformation from spherical shape or shear flow. The numerical results show excellent agreement with transient analytical solutions for the interface position. Finally, the methodology is applied to simulate fluid particles rising in quiescent medium. In particular, the behaviour of water-immersed toluene droplets is investigated for a specifi c range of diameters in which oscillations are observed. The transient velocity pro files are compared with experimental data, exposing the methodology's ability to represent real phenomenological events.
