Sažetak
District heating plays a key role in achieving high primary energy savings and the reduction of the overall environmental impact of the energy sector. This was recently recognized by the European Commission, which emphasizes the importance of these systems, especially when integrated with renewable energy sources, like solar, biomass, geothermal, etc. On the other hand, high amounts of heat are currently being wasted in the industry sector, which causes low energy efficiency of these processes. This excess heat can be utilized and transported to the final customer by a distribution network. Although it could cover a high share of the European Union’s heating demand, there is one significant barrier to its utilization. A large number of industries and other sources are located far from the potential customers and the areas of high heat demand densities. For this reason, it is necessary to make a detailed analysis of the potential exploitation of excess heat, taking into account both the technical and economic aspects. The main goal of this work is to elaborate a method which will determine the technically and economically feasible solution for the coverage of the heat demand of a certain area. The method will focus on excess heat, taking into consideration it’s distance from the demand. It will be compared with local renewable energy sources as a part of the district heating network. Nevertheless, the method will also consider individual gas systems, which are currently the mostly used heating systems in Europe.
