Sažetak
The paper will look into translations of children’s literature in Croatia, paying special attention to the translations of Italian books for children. A bibliography of translations of Italian authors shows the constant presence of three Italian authors: Carlo Collodi, Edmondo de Amicis, and Gianni Rodari. This enables us to track down the historical, socio-political and cultural context in which the translations of their works occurred (cf. Pokorn, 2011). The reasons for retranslations will be explained. Also, primary school curricula will be used to explore the presence of these authors in compulsory reading lists. The process of retranslation will be investigated within the theoretical background of translation as adaptation (Klinberg 1986 ; O'Driscoll 2011). Retranslation will be exemplified by Collodi's Pinocchio, a book that has been present in Croatian translation for more than seventy years. During this period, the book was retranslated on several occasions. Three of the translations will be analysed (Kaleb 1943, Car-Matutinović 1996, Bitenc 2003) with a view to establishing to what extent the retranslations have been altered to suit contemporary child readers.
