Sažetak
In this paper the term “retranslation” is used to refer to a new translation into the same target language of a previously translated work. In the case of Pinocchio, the work was first translated into Croatian in 1943 by writer and translator Vjekoslav Kaleb. This translation is still being read by schoolchildren in Croatia, and it co-exists with a second translation (by poet and translator Ljerka Car-Matutinović), which appeared in 1996, in a completely different socio-political setting. The process of retranslation is investigated within a theoretical background of translation as adaptation (Klingberg 1986). The aim of the research is twofold: (1) to identify cultural markers, such as personal names, foodstuffs, intertextual references (and other, if identified) and compare the solutions the translators resorted to in the two translations ; the identified culture-bearing elements will be analysed according to the level of domestication and foreignization present in the translations. (2) A comparative analysis will look into possible differences between the two translations that occurred due to the different socio-political context in which they appeared (see Pokorn, 2012). Namely, the first translation appeared during World War II, at the onset of the socialist/communist regime of the former Yugoslavia, whereas the latter appeared after Croatia became an independent democratic state.
