Sažetak
Ferries play a key role in transportation of passengers and cars between mainland and islands in most European coastal countries, especially during tourist season. They also represent a significant source of pollution caused by burning fossil fuels in their engines used for propulsion and electrical power generation. In order to comply with existing and future regulations and strategies to limit ship emissions, governments and ferry operators should turn to adoption of new technologies and innovative solutions which will replace existing diesel engine power plants. In this paper, the use of hybrid and battery power solutions on ferries is analysed, both from the perspective of on board equipment and coastal infrastructure. Comparative analysis of classic diesel-electric power system, hybrid system with diesel generators and batteries and fully electrical power system is made. In respect to proposed solutions, the requirements for supporting land based infrastructure are analysed.
