Sažetak
This paper reports on one aspect of the preliminary findings of a research project investigating the most effective ways of ensuring that the neighbourhood environment is designed inclusively to improve the quality of life of older people. Focus groups with older people were conducted in different locational environments. Whilst these discussions covered a broad range of issues, we report on what older people perceive as the benefits of going outdoors and where they typically go within their local neighbourhood, plus an examination of the barriers to walking. The results largely confirm anecdotal evidence in that older people have concerns about the quality and maintenance of the environment, provision (pavements, suitable crossing points, adequate lighting) and personal safety (fear of accidents with cyclists and cars, fear of falling due to pavement surface, anti-social behaviour and fear of crime).
