Sažetak
The georeferencing method of the map sheets of the second military survey of historical Croatia (under the Hungarian jurisdiction between 1867 and 1918) is discussed. This survey was the first one in the whole Habsburg Empire that had a geodetic base. The scale of the sheets are 1:28 800. The survey was conducted in Croatia between 1865–1869. As the sheets contain neither geographic (ellipsoidal) nor projection coordinates, the four corners of each sheet can only be used as ground control points (GCPs). The sheets (field extents: 15171.8 meters in both direction) are in a projected plane (Cassini projection), where the projection center and the parameters of its geodetic datum should be defined for the conversion of the sheet contents to the modern coordinate systems (eg. UTM or Croatian HDKS). This way, the sheets can be georeferenced using only the four corner points, if one knows the position of the projection center in the sheet mosaic. No further GCP selection is needed. The base ellipsoid of the survey was the Zach-Oriani hybrid (a=6 376 130 m ; f=1/310). The analyzed territory of Croatia falls into two separated zone of the second survey. The majority of the land belongs to the Ivanić system (projection center: Kloštar Ivanić ; NE corner of sheet ’Section 6 Westiche Colonne I’ ; Φ=45° 44’ 21.25” ; Λ=16° 25’ 23.14” ; datum parameters: dX=+1782 m ; dY=+218 m ; dZ=+556 m). A small part around the city of Rijeka (described on the maps as Fiume, its historical Hungarian and Italian name) belongs to the Coastal Zone (projection center: Krimberg ; NE corner of sheet ’Section 10 Westliche Colonne I’ ; Φ=45° 55’ 44.51” ; Λ=14° 28’ 27.23” ; datum parameters: dX=+1772 m ; dY=+202 m ; dZ=+563 m). With respect to the survey technology, the two datums are so close to each other that in the GIS practice they can be replaced by just one of them. Note that the present territory of Croatia spreads to two more zones: Baranja and the Legrad area are in the Hungarian projection zone (Gellérthegy, Budapest centered) while the southern part is in the old Dalmatian zone (Vienna centered), not discussed here.
