Sažetak
Thousands of tonnes of pharmaceuticals are annually used in human and veterinary medicine for treatment and for prevention illness. This problem already have been recognized as an emerging research area. Sorption is an extremely important process because it may dramatically affect the fate and impacts of pharmaceuticals/chemicals in the environment. The degree of sorption mainly depends on physico-chemical properties of pharmaceuticals, the type of solid matrices, and environmental conditions. Because all of that, the aim of this study was to experimentally determine the Kd values of nitrofurantoin, an antibiotic drug in seven different natural soil and seven different sediment samples with different physico- chemical properties. Sample preparation of soils/sediments and batch sorption experiments were performed according to the OECD 106 Procedure [1]. Sorption phenomena were described with sorption isotherms. The influence of ionic strength and pH of the nitrofurantoin solution were investigated. Results show that increasing the ionic strength and pH, reduces sorption coefficient. Kinetics of nitrofurantoin sorption was also investigated. These findings will certainly contribute to a better understanding of the nitrofurantoin fate in the environment. References [1] OECD, 2000.
