Sažetak
An average annual rate of around 5%, which is significantly greater than the growth of global GDP, makes air transport one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy and one of the greatest contributors to the advancement of modern global society. World passenger air traffic flows and achieved levels of civil air transport activity in different world regions are analysed in the paper, particularly traffic results of the leading air carriers and major airports. Comparing levels of economic and social development with air traffic activity it is found that the pattern of air traffic growth reflects the economic conditions experienced in each region, suggesting a close historic synergy between economic growth and airline activity which acts as an economic catalyst and in turn benefits from it.
