Sažetak
One of the basic objectives of the present railway authorities refers to the reduction of maintenance costs allocated for maintaining the railway infrastructure. Due to the frequent need for conducting additional maintenance and recovery (or even overhaul), which are disproportional compared to other sections of the railway track, several European railway authorities define the transition zones as one of the most problematic parts on the railway track. One of the tasks within the international scientific research project „Sustainable Maintenance and Analysis of Rail Transport Infrastructure (SMART Rail), is to analyse problems in the transition zones. Pilot section was chosen at bridge “Buna” on the railway line Zagreb - Sisak- Novska, focusing on the design and construction of new bridge transitions at both sides. Starting with reviewing and evaluating the existing conditions by application of geotechnical and geophysical investigation methods, different approaches for both ends were applied for a systematic comparison of the overall performance. Innovative materials like geotextiles and geogrids as well as cement stabilized materials with controlled granulation were all included in the design. Geotechnical specialized FEM modelling was carried out for a preliminary analysis and evaluation of both approaches. Transitions were designed in a way that both settlements and stiffness variations are smoothened in a reasonable way so that both safety and comfort of passing trains are not negatively affected at these locations.
