Sažetak
Tourism development is closely related to space and landscape in particular. In most cases, tourism areas use and transform high quality spaces such as littoral zone and rural landscapes. Scale and intensity of such transformation depends on building type and specific form of tourism, as well as on landscape characteristics. The main objective of this research was to determine the relation of resort architecture to the landscape as well as to identify possible distinctions of that relation due to different periods of their construction. For this purpose resort space organization and landscape characteristics (structural, visual and ecological) analysis was carried out on the example of six resorts in western Istria built in a period between 1950 and 2010. The obtained results show the correlation between period of resort construction and its relation to the surrounding landscape. Relation quality of resort architecture and landscape was more positive and improving in the period from 1960’s to 1980’s while the beginning of 21st century is characterized with severe degradation of that relation. Importance of these findings, altogether with other future similar surveys in other parts of Croatia, stems from the need for awareness growth of importance of resort architecture quality which, due to intensive tourism development in Croatia, is increasingly occupying more space, and thus significantly affects the quality of landscape.
