Sažetak
The influence of popular culture on contemporary children's novel is multifaceted and complex, and is reflected in all discursive levels. The paper discusses the elements and strategies of popular culture we see in contemporary Croatian children's novel (more precisely, in the novels published during the period from 1970 to today, when popular culture experienced a remarkable boom), which can be seen in the concepts of designing novelistic characters. Analytical insight into the characters of certain children's novels from the mentioned period, with regard to various aspects, i.e. worldview and complex world of ideas, linguistic habitus, social and psychological background of the characters, the grownups vs.children opposition, gender stereotypes role, determination through typical motifs of contemporary popular culture (primarily related to urban areas as centers of entertainment and consumption), detects the manner and extent of the influence of popular culture in the context of modern Croatian children's novel. All of the above is being considered given the general attitude toward the popular culture and literature for children (both the older, as well as the contemporary, reviewed here) while, on the other hand, it's linked to the postmodern determinants of contemporary social and cultural (especially literary) practice .
